The NÖBET cooler beside Çınar Büfe at 03:00 in the rain. Behind its lit glass door are five shelves of cans, one colour to a shelf, with the hour printed on each shelf's rail.

The cooler

One shelf per hour.

NÖBET is not in supermarkets. It lives in a glass-door cooler outside kiosks that are open all night, and the cooler is part of the product: 22:00 on the top shelf, 07:00 on the bottom, the hour printed on every rail, so the right can is the one your hand finds at three in the morning.

What it is

A cooler, plugged in properly.

Size600 × 620 × 1880 mm, on four levelling feet
ShelvesFive wire shelves, twelve cans each: 22:00, 01:00, 03:00, 05:00, 07:00, top to bottom
Cold4 °C, R600a compressor behind the grille at the foot
LightTwo LED strips down the door jambs; the lit header is the only branding
Power230 V, 50 Hz, a Schuko plug on 2.5 m of cable with a strain relief at the rear foot
WhereOutside, under the kiosk's awning, plugged into the kiosk's own outdoor socket (IP44)

Concept specification. There is no cooler; there is a Blender model of one, and the model is plugged in.

Behind the cooler at night: its black power cable leaves a strain relief at the rear foot, lies on the paving with some slack, climbs the kiosk's side wall in two clips and ends in a plug seated in an outdoor socket whose cover is flipped open.

The unglamorous part

Where the cable goes.

From a strain relief at the cooler's rear foot, along the paving with some slack, up the kiosk's side wall in two clips, into an outdoor socket with its cover open. This is the view from behind the cooler that no hero shot shows. It is here because a lit cooler with a cable ending in mid-air is a lie, and we checked.

Where to find one

Twelve kiosks that never close.

Near hospitals, ports, taxi ranks, bakeries and bus stations — the places where somebody is working at three in the morning. (Invented, like everything here.)
